Coney Island Development Corporation Announces Winners of 2009 Coney Island Student Art Competition

New York City, May 19, 2009

The Coney Island Development Corporation (CIDC) today announced the winners of the 2009 Coney Island Student Art Competition. The competition titled “My Vision of the Future of Coney Island,” was an opportunity for Coney Island students to express their artistic creativity and create a vision of what they believe the Coney Island of tomorrow should look like. The 2009 Student Art Competition was open to students residing in Coney Island, Brooklyn, in grades one through eight.

“As we move through the public approval process for the Coney Island rezoning, we have the opportunity to hear what the community in Coney Island has to say, but often, the children are left out,” said CIDC President, Lynn Kelly. “We wanted to give the students an opportunity to show their creativity and express their vision for what the future of Coney Island will look like, since they will be the ones inhabiting it.”

All entries and winners will be recognized at an award ceremony at the New York Aquarium on Tuesday, May 26th. The winners will receive a Coney Island prize pack, which includes tickets to the Brooklyn Cyclones, New York Aquarium, Deno’s Wonder Wheel, Brooklyn Museum of Art and Ringling Bros Coney Island Boom A Ring Circus. Prizes will also be given to the teachers of the winning students. Extra consideration was given to entries that incorporated environmentally friendly technology, such as solar, wind or water power.
