Coney Island Career Opportunities Fair
August 14, 2008
I hope this note finds you well and that your summer so far has been healthy and happy. We’ve actually had quite a busy season here at the Coney Island Development Corporation (CIDC), and I wanted to just touch base with a quick update on one of the most exciting and important community initiatives we’ve ever undertaken.
As you may know, on August 1st we concluded a series of CIDC summer job readiness workshops with the first-ever Coney Island Career Opportunities Fair at Keyspan Park. I am proud to report that the Fair was a huge success and the feedback we are receiving from both community members and companies who participated has been extremely positive. More than 400 area residents attended and met with 30 employers and representatives of 14 job training program providers. Not only were we delighted to hear from one of the companies on-hand that they had received more than 100 resumes, but we were honored to have received the following email from one of our community partners in the event:
“I am writing to formally thank you and everyone involved with the success of last week’s Coney Island Job Fair…The optimistic energy inside Keyspan Park on Friday was palpable. What a powerful, life-affirming narrative for the Coney Island community. Hopefully it is a 'dialogue' that will continue to be 'spoken' as Coney matures and grows. Moreover, it is a story that deserves to be publicly heralded to add a measure of truth and balance to the plethora of negative publicity too often associated with our beloved island. I look forward to future collaborations and the constructive results they are certain to yield.”
CIDC’s mission has always been to develop innovative programs and initiatives that benefit all of the residents and stakeholders of Coney Island, with efforts that range from the proposed Coney Island rezoning framework to the new community center and this first-ever Job Fair. We are continually looking for ways to help provide new opportunities throughout the community, and we were reminded of the importance of this comprehensive mission when we received a copy of the attached article written by local public school teacher Scott Krivitsky of PS 188. I thought you might like to read it as well.
We’ll be back in touch soon with additional updates and information, but in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact the CIDC at 212-312-4233 with any questions or concerns. Thanks so much and enjoy the rest of the summer!
Warm regards,
Lynn Kelly
